Holidays for Heroes
… God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God will help her right early. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice, the earth melts. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how he has wrought desolations in the earth.  He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear, he burns the chariots with fire! “Be still, and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth!” The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Psalm 46

Every Christmas and Valentine’s Day the Military Moms Prayer Group ships gift packages to the troops to let them know that they are not forgotten. The gift drives – now known as Holidays for Heroes – have generated an avalanche of community support, with donations of food and gift items from throughout Vero Beach.  Local elementary school children have contributed hundreds of handmade cards. Since 2006, more than 3,500 packages have reached the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan in time for the holidays, thanks to this community-wide outreach.

Biblical Blessings: Valentines for Heroes 2010

Every box shipped to the troops from the Military Moms Prayer Group for Valentine’s Day this year will contain not only chocolates and and cards handmade by local children, but also a copy of Psalm 91, the “Soldiers Prayer,” printed by an anonymous donor. The American Bible Society has contributed military Bibles and copies of the booklet, “God is Our Shelter,” endorsed by the Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish chaplains of the Armed Forces. Linda Colontrelle founded the holiday gift drive in December 2006, while her son, Danny, a graduate of West Point, was serving his second tour in Iraq.

Prayer group member Gail Reams carried on the holiday tradition in 2007, reaching out to sailors, soldiers, and marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Her son, Scott, served two tours in Iraq with the Marine Corps.
